PREFIXES
The word prefix is a good illustration of how medical terms are
formed. PRE- comes from the
Latin meaning ‘before’ or ‘in front of’; FIX comes from the Latin figere,
meaning ‘to fasten’. Therefore, the term prefix means ‘to fasten
in front of or before’.
The prefix is the
beginning part of a medical term which modifies the term’s meaning. However,
not all medical terms will have
prefixes. In fact, many medical terms do not have
prefixes. When you see a hyphen or dash ( - ) following, a component
term, this means it is a prefix as shown below in the examples:
